Description of the Painting
A winter sun setting over a frozen plain — and doing so without drama, without spectacle, simply because the day has run its course and this is what comes next. The light is a thin burn of amber and gold along the horizon, flanked by the last soft orange of a sky that has already begun its retreat into blue. Below, the ice stretches in broad pale strokes, broken here and there by dark suggestions of land and the sun's own reflection pooled in gold on the white. The sky is the larger half — vast, layered with horizontal cloud, cool and indifferent and beautiful in the way that only very large, very quiet things can be. This is a landscape of the north, of distances that do not diminish but simply continue, of cold that is not cruel but clarifying, and of a light that burns low and true at the edge of the world.
