Description of the Painting

She bows over the child the way a flame bows over what it warms — not consuming, not retreating, simply present with the full weight of itself. Her face is pale and featureless in its serenity, eyes closed, having arrived at a stillness that has nothing to do with rest and everything to do with devotion. The child nestles within her form as though it has not yet fully separated from her — as though the world outside this circle of warmth is something that can wait a little longer. Behind them, gold floods the right side of the canvas like a conviction, like something that decided long ago to stay. The left holds grey and teal and blue — the memory of before, the world that was — and neither side asks to win.
