Description of the Painting
Rectangles of varying depth — some pale and hushed, others dark with the warmth of aged wood or the density of shadow — are distributed across a white ground with the unselfconscious rhythm of objects placed by someone who trusted their instinct over their ruler. The dominant form, upper left, is a large rounded frame within a frame, an empty centre that draws the eye inward and holds it there. The darker passages — near-black and deep brown — anchor the composition at its lower edges, while the upper registers remain light and considered. Each form has its own particular surface: some smooth, some stroked with directional brushwork, a quiet variety within a restrained vocabulary. This is a painting that lives in the cumulative effect of many small decisions, none of them wrong, all of them entirely at ease with each other.
