Description of the Painting

A T-shaped form of articulated brick crosses the canvas like a structural element remembered from a building that no longer exists — each small block raised and individual, casting its own shadow, the whole row carrying the particular dignity of things made one piece at a time. Against it, two large masses of deep brown and luminous white hold either side with the stillness of load-bearing walls. The palette is the interior of an old kiln: terracotta, raw sienna, the black of deep shadow, and the white of something that has been fired clean. The paint is thick throughout, applied with conviction and left to stand — no smoothing, no apology. This is a painting about the pleasure of material: the weight of pigment, the memory of the hand, the satisfaction of a surface that has been worked until it knows exactly what it is.
