Description of the Painting

Most landscapes keep their distance — this one does not. Three birch trunks fill the foreground with an almost physical presence, their white bark marked with the dark notations of knots and scars, close enough to touch. It is a deliberate intimacy: the painter has placed us not before the scene but inside it, standing among the trees at the water's edge. Around and behind them, autumn erupts — deep gold canopies, flashes of yellow-green, orange and purple at the roots, a forest in full chromatic declaration. The lake glimpsed between the trunks is dark and reflective, gathering colour from the bank in loose strokes of amber and teal. Beyond, the trees thin and lighten toward a pale sky. The birches themselves are the subject — not symbols, not backdrop, but living presences with their own particular beauty: the white that holds light differently from any other white, the bark that peels like old letters, the branches that reach without asking permission.
