Description of the Painting

The forest is burning — not with fire but with colour, orange and crimson and deep wine crowding the upper half in a blaze that pushes against the pale sky. Birch trunks cut through it all in white verticals, indifferent to the spectacle around them, and below, the river receives everything in its still surface, translating the heat of the trees into the cool register of water. The reflections are painted in vertical strokes that blur the colour downward, each one a little darker, a little more abstracted, as if the river is slowly making the season its own. The brushwork throughout is bold and physical — no hesitation, no apology, the kind of painting that comes from direct encounter with a subject that will not hold still. Both banks glow.
