Description of the Painting
Summer here is full-voiced and unguarded — yellow fields sweeping across the hillside in broad, generous strokes, wildflowers in magenta and violet scattered through the foreground with the freedom of things that grew where they chose. A river catches the light at the lower right, its surface a cool blue among all the warmth, and beyond it the land softens into layered greens and blue-grey mountains. A farmhouse sits quietly in the middle distance, half-sheltered by dark trees, unassertive and entirely at ease in the landscape grown up around it. Above, the sky is active — great white and grey clouds moving with the confidence of weather that knows its own mind.
