Description of the Painting

Where the earlier shore painting was stripped to its essentials — three horizontal bands and near silence — this one is full: a sunset at its most theatrical, a sea at its most turquoise, a beach that holds shells and reflections and the full warmth of a sky in its finest hour. Waves curl and break in vivid teal, their white crests catching the orange light, while the wet sand mirrors the whole spectacle in liquid gold and lavender. A headland on the left carries trees in deep green and chartreuse, and above them clouds build in peach and violet and amber — a sky that has committed entirely to its own performance. The two shells in the foreground are the painting's most intimate detail — small, specific, unhurried — anchoring a composition that might otherwise float away into pure atmosphere.
