Description of the Painting

She has stepped into the garden but not quite arrived there. Eyes lowered, hand raised to her chin in that ancient gesture of the mind turning inward, she stands among yellow blooms and turbulent brushwork as though the flowers themselves are thoughts — Van Gogh's restless strokes alive behind her, the world in motion while she is perfectly still. Her white hat brim curves downward like a held breath, and the blue ribbon at its band is the same blue as her dress, as the deep teal garden — she is not visiting this place, she has grown from it. There is something unresolved in her posture, something mid-sentence. Whatever she is considering has not yet become a decision. The painting asks nothing of us but to wait with her, quietly, in the yellow and the blue, in the patient language of flowers that bloom without knowing they are being watched.
