Description of the Painting
A city remembered rather than seen — reduced to its essential grammar of verticals and horizontals, then saturated with the colour of what it feels like to be inside one. The upper half is all restraint: pale grey and ivory and blue-grey architectural planes, cool and composed, the skyline dissolved into abstraction. Below, everything changes. A dense horizontal band of orange, violet, teal, yellow and red ignites the middle of the canvas like a street-level view through half-closed eyes — all energy, all simultaneity, the city's noise rendered in colour rather than sound. At the far right, a warm luminous glow softens the composition, suggesting a light source beyond the frame — a window, a streetlamp, the low sun between towers. This painting does not depict a city so much as distil the sensation of one: the particular mix of anonymity and intensity, grey calm overhead and vivid human life below, that makes an urban landscape unlike any other kind.
