Description of the Painting
Where the earlier waterfall painting was anchored in stone and season, this one is made almost entirely of light and air. The falls descend in soft white and teal — not so much rushing as floating, a curtain of water that has lost its weight to the luminous haze surrounding it. Above and to either side, autumn colours scatter freely: orange and yellow and pink and green, applied with the loose abandon of a painter trusting feeling over form, leaves and branches barely distinguishable from the light moving through them. The source of the radiance at the top is never declared — it could be sun through mist, or mist become sun — and that ambiguity is the painting's greatest quality. Everything here is dissolving into something else: colour into light, form into atmosphere, season into a feeling too diffuse to name. A painting not of a place but of a state — that particular, brief, wordless clarity that sometimes descends near water, in the presence of falling light.
