Description of the Painting
Forms tumble over and through one another with the contained energy of something that has been moving for a long time and has learned how to move without breaking anything. Curves and right angles negotiate the centre of the canvas, fitting together like the interlocking parts of a mechanism no one fully understands but that appears, somehow, to work. The palette is sand and shadow, cream and the warm brown of aged paper, with dark passages of charcoal and near-black that give the stack of forms its depth and its gravity. A soft wash of beige surrounds the whole, a room of light in which this quiet complexity has chosen to live. This is a painting that holds its own counsel — neither asking to be understood nor refusing it, simply present, dense with form, and entirely sufficient in itself.
