Description of the Painting
A pale path winds upward through a riot of colour toward a hilltop village that seems to have grown from the stone it stands on — its honey-coloured walls and terracotta roofs so naturally settled into the hillside that the boundary between built and planted has long since dissolved. Cypress trees rise like dark exclamation marks among the buildings, their verticality echoing the bell tower that presides over the whole. The foreground is a feast: magenta and orange and teal and acid yellow jostle in the dense undergrowth, applied with an expressive freedom that makes every brushstroke feel like a declaration. Yet the composition never tips into chaos — the pale road holds the eye, the village anchors the horizon, and the mountains and cloud-lit sky above give the whole scene its proper scale. This is southern Europe at its most generous: the light warm, the colours unrestrained, the village above promising shade and stillness after the long, brilliant walk up.
