Description of the Painting

The foreground is alive with it — reeds and marsh grass cutting upward in dark blue and amber, a golden seedhead catching the only clear light in the painting, small bursts of lavender and orange and crimson nestled in the tangle like wildflowers in a ditch. Beyond this intimate, buzzing edge, the landscape opens into a cooler world: pale water or estuary, blue hills in the distance, and in the upper right a loose architectural suggestion — walls, perhaps, or simply the way paint describes a settlement seen from far off. The whole painting has the quality of being inside the reeds rather than looking at them — surrounded by colour and detail in the near, then released into light and distance. A landscape painted at the threshold between the particular and the vast, where the small and close and alive exists at the very edge of the open and the far.
