Description of the Painting
Winter light is a different thing altogether — not warm, not bright, but somehow more honest than any other season's. Here it filters through bare trees whose branches reach upward with the patience of things that have learned to wait. The trunks rise in dark verticals against a ground of cream and blush and cool grey, and at the heart of the composition, a soft rectangle of amber glows like a lamp seen through frosted glass — the one promise of warmth in a landscape that is otherwise beautifully restrained. The snow below is not white so much as the memory of white, layered and brushed and gently varied. This is a forest in repose, stripped to its essential self, and the painter has understood that bare things — bones, branches, silence — carry their own particular and irreplaceable grace.
