Description of the Painting

Snow has settled on everything and the world has gone quiet. A snow-laden spruce stands to the left with the patient dignity of something that has stood through many winters, its branches bowed under white but unbroken. Between the trees, a river moves — dark, amber-tinged, still liquid in a landscape that has otherwise consented to stillness. Its water catches the warm ochre of the bank and carries it into the composition like a memory of another season.
