Description of the Painting
The skirt has become the painting. It opens like a stained-glass window mid-spin — teal, yellow, peach, lavender, white — each panel of color a different note in a chord the body is playing. She tilts into the turn with her eyes downcast and her arms tracing the air as though leaving a signature in it, as though the space itself must be signed before she leaves it. The brushwork around her is soft and unresolved, a teal atmosphere that has forgotten where the dancer ends and the room begins. This is Degas seen through a prism: the same devotion to the unrepeatable instant, but the colors have been set free.
