Description of the Painting

She stands alone beneath a moon that is too large for the sky — golden, full, pressing close as if it too wants to understand what she is waiting for. Her red dress burns against the deep blue of the night, the only warm vertical in a world of cool mosaic. She does not face us. Her head turns slightly, profile offered to whatever is coming, or whatever has not yet arrived. Around her feet, scattered dots of light drift like embers or fireflies or the small bright thoughts that come only at night — orange and teal and white, uncontained, alive. The tall pale forms behind her might be trees, or buildings, or simply the night holding itself upright. This is the painting of an in-between moment — not quite anticipation, not quite peace — the particular stillness of someone who has learned that the waiting itself is where everything happens.
