Description of the Painting
Light arrives from the right like a slow exhalation — a broad diagonal of white and cream pressing through the grey-blue mist, dissolving everything it touches into softness. To the left, amber and orange hold their ground against the dissolving, a cluster of autumn colour that refuses to be entirely subsumed into the haze. Two bare black trunks rise from the warmth, thin and precise, the only elements that have kept their edges in a painting that has otherwise chosen to blur everything else. The painter — whose signature rests at the lower right — has understood something about the particular quality of mist-filtered autumn light: that it does not illuminate so much as it transforms, turning the solid world into something temporary, something between one state and another. A landscape of transition, painted at the exact moment when warmth and cool, colour and light, have agreed to meet and briefly dissolve into each other.
