Description of the Painting

Few places on earth have been painted as often as Santorini, and fewer still have earned it — the particular arrangement of white walls, deep blue sea and Aegean light that the island offers is not picturesque by accident but by a kind of geological and architectural conspiracy centuries in the making. Here the scene is rendered boldly: white volumes stack and cascade down the cliff face in broad, confident strokes, animated by a violet dome that crowns the composition like a held note. Against them, warm accents of orange, yellow and rose keep the white from becoming cold. The Aegean spreads flat and intensely blue to the left — not a gentle sea but an absolute one, a blue that admits no argument. Steps descend in shadow and lavender, leading somewhere below the frame. This is a painting that earns its familiarity — it does not pretend Santorini is undiscovered, but finds in its well-known beauty something worth looking at again, carefully, as if for the first time.
