Description of the Painting

A narrow street pulls the eye deep into the canvas the way old cities pull the walker — without insisting, simply by existing, by having depth and shadow and the promise of something around the next turn. The buildings rise in fractured planes of ivory, lavender and grey, their facades broken by windows that are less windows than dark absences, punctuated by sudden flashes of orange, red and amber that read as glimpsed interiors, a pot of flowers, a lit doorway. The palette is predominantly cool — white and pale violet dominate — yet warmth persists in scattered accents, as it always does in lived streets. There are no people here, yet the painting is full of human presence: in the worn surfaces, the irregular planes, the small vivid details that accumulate into the feeling of a place long inhabited. This is a street that has its own memory — layered, unhurried, indifferent to the particular hour, content simply to be old and itself.
