Description of the Painting

The sun sets directly at the end of the harbour, and the marina receives it like an old conversation resumed — familiar, unhurried, suffused with the particular gold of a day that knew how to end well. Sailboat masts rise vertically against the luminous haze, their fine lines the only precise things in a world otherwise resolved into soft planes of ivory, teal and amber. Buildings flank the water in broad, abstracted blocks of peach and grey and pale orange, more suggestion than architecture, standing back to let the light speak. The water below is a mosaic of reflected warmth — gold and teal and the blue of hulls — carrying the whole scene in its quiet surface with the ease of something that has done this every evening for years. This is a painting about the hour when a working harbour becomes something else entirely: when the boats are still, the light is soft, and the ordinary business of coming and going gives way, briefly and beautifully, to simply being here.
