Description of the Painting
The day is ending and the port has never looked more itself. A terrace of buildings lines the waterfront in peach, coral, lavender, and warm ochre — colours that seem not painted so much as sun-soaked, as though the walls have spent decades absorbing the light and are now giving it back. Behind them, a great cliff rises in deep green and slate, its mass anchoring the composition against a sky that opens into peach and pale gold at the horizon. White sailboats rest in the harbour with the easy stillness of things that have arrived and are in no hurry to leave, their masts rising in slender verticals, their reflections pooling in the luminous blue water below. Along the quay, figures move beneath colourful awnings — the suggestion of a town still alive with the end of the day. This is a painting of arrival: the particular contentment of a place that has everything it needs, bathed in the last generous light of a Mediterranean evening.
